President's Message

We have had quite a year, and it's a pleasure for me to reflect a little on one of the most memorable ones as President of SONRA.

Our year started off with a bang with our usual fun and merriment at our awards BBQ at Admiralty House, and many of you were recognized for your contribution to our Club and in general, to the hobby. Field Day this year proved a challenge, and conditions appeared to be poor. It was discovered by a couple of us who listened from our homes that same day, that conditions were quite good, so this year we may try out Cape Spear.

During the year we also saw the introduction of "planned giving" to our Club. Made possible by Nate, VO1NP the program created a bursary at Memorial in our name to which members can leave gifts from their estates.

This past year saw the arrival of a new Site Manager for Parks Canada and we welcomed a new friend, Audrey Levesque. Our relationship with Parks Canada continues to flourish. December 12th operations were enjoyed by all, and as always, our Christmas Dinner at the RCAF Club was quite a time.

One of my favourite memories will remain the 2011 Ham Fest and RAC AGM at the Battery. Our visitors had a ball and still speak of Skipper Charlie and his screech in. The whales were marvelous, brunch delicious and the whole event a time to remember.

The year began to wind down as our latest Ham class was formed and it resulted in nine new Hams. To Ken, VO1ST who organized things and his capable instructors, thank you. It's folks like you that make a difference.

Our year drew to close in big way. If you told me a year ago that we would be hosting a Princess at VO1AA, I'd have told you that you were nuts. But, it happened and the Princess Elettra Marconi Event was a great experience, and I am told by our new found friend Nicola Greco that it moved the Princess in a big way. To Dave, Mike, Ira, Joe and all who made it happen, you have our thanks.
